Christmas Nougat

January 6, 2023

Three years ago, a piano student’s parent made me this delicious candy for Christmas. I, of course, got the recipe and put it in my book so I could start a new tradition.

Finally, in December of 2021, I bought all the ingredients.

Weeellll, then I got COVID over the Christmas holiday. I had about as much energy as a warmed-over slug.

A few days in, I ate a bunch of marshmallows right out of the bag. The next day, I ate some more. The third day, I plopped a handful into my homemade hot chocolate.

Uh…well… once both bags of marshmallows were gone (cringe… I can’t believe I’m telling everybody what a pig I am), I started in on the Dots. I don’t even particularly like Dots, but I ate them anyway. Both big boxes. All by myself.

I was suddenly left with two bags of white chocolate chips and no way to make my candy. So, off I trudged to the store to buy some more marshmallows and Dots. This time, I managed to wait until everything was melted into a gooey, delicious nougat before I ate it.

I haven’t even dared to buy the ingredients since. I guess I could make it a birthday tradition instead of a Christmas tradition. It’s coming up quickly (Monday), so I best get shopping.

One thing’s for dang sure: the minute those marshmallows, Dots, and white chocolate chips enter my kitchen, I better make the recipe right away, or glue my mouth shut.

About Marie de Haan

Marie is a gifted pianist, playing since the age of nine. As a teenager, she composed mainly instrumental piano music. She released her powerful debut single, “I Am Broken,” on October 22, 2020, a song whose creation drew heavily upon the trauma she endured as a victim of childhood sexual abuse. Marie held a benefit concert on September 10, 2021, in Skagit County. A portion of the proceeds went to CrossRoads Youth Ranch; this local organization—through equine therapy—empowers “at-risk and sexually exploited youth to heal, grow, and thrive.” She has continued to write music: Christian, folk, and country. Marie loves hiking, gardening, and photography. The Pacific Northwest—where she lives with her husband—is the backdrop for her favorite activities.
