Back in January of last year when this picture was taken, I was doing a little songwriting into the wee hours of the morning. I had the beginnings to four songs in that binder behind me: one in the key of D major, one in A, one in C, and my first attempt at 6/8 time.
In 2021, in the first week of January, I wrote “Turmoil” and “Weep” which have since been released and made into lyric videos.
While I realize I can compose any month of the year, January seems to be the most productive for me for some reason, so for the past three days, I have been working (yes, all hours of the night) in this binder again, organizing my music.
The “songs”—some of them are 4 measures long so far and some are 8 pages—are starting to pile up. I believe there are 12 of them.
Since we’re already three days into the month, I guess I better get my bahookie in gear and start finishing them.
About Marie de Haan
Marie is a gifted pianist, playing since the age of nine. As a teenager, she composed mainly instrumental piano music. She released her powerful debut single, “I Am Broken,” on October 22, 2020, a song whose creation drew heavily upon the trauma she endured as a victim of childhood sexual abuse. Marie held a benefit concert on September 10, 2021, in Skagit County. A portion of the proceeds went to CrossRoads Youth Ranch; this local organization—through equine therapy—empowers “at-risk and sexually exploited youth to heal, grow, and thrive.” She has continued to write music: Christian, folk, and country. Marie loves hiking, gardening, and photography. The Pacific Northwest—where she lives with her husband—is the backdrop for her favorite activities.
