Back on December 10, the praise team that I’m on did the song “Noel” for both services.
My friend, Patty—she’s my 80-year-old former piano student—happens to attend the same church and texted me later that week. “I am walking and guess what song will not leave my head!!! When are you going to record it????”
When, indeed.
I tried to explain that she could Google “Chris Tomlin” or “Lauren Daigle” and listen to it as many times as she wanted, but Patty wasn’t having it. She wanted to hear us sing and play it again.
I didn’t have the heart to say, “Sure, give me a thousand bucks and I can make that happen.”
Every time I release a song, it’s not exactly cheap. I need to pay the producer and the singers and that’s just for starters. I’m not the type of person to start a GoFund Me: “Starving artist would like money to keep on recording music.”
Would I love a benefactor who would be willing to pay all my songwriting expenses? You betcha.😂
For now, I’ll just keep saving my pennies, teaching those piano lessons, sticking to the budget, and maybe someday I’ll have a Christmas album so Patty can listen away.
About Marie de Haan
Marie is a gifted pianist, playing since the age of nine. As a teenager, she composed mainly instrumental piano music. She released her powerful debut single, “I Am Broken,” on October 22, 2020, a song whose creation drew heavily upon the trauma she endured as a victim of childhood sexual abuse. Marie held a benefit concert on September 10, 2021, in Skagit County. A portion of the proceeds went to CrossRoads Youth Ranch; this local organization—through equine therapy—empowers “at-risk and sexually exploited youth to heal, grow, and thrive.” She has continued to write music: Christian, folk, and country. Marie loves hiking, gardening, and photography. The Pacific Northwest—where she lives with her husband—is the backdrop for her favorite activities.
