Studio Lingo & Music Theory

June 5, 2024

There are so many times in the studio that the producer and the singer talk back and forth while I sit on the couch with this look on my face. 😏

I didn’t go to college, so I am not well-versed in terms of the music industry.

Some lingo and theory I’ve learned this week:

  1. “Fly the chorus” means cut-and-paste the chorus throughout the recording as the base layer.
  2. BGVs—sometimes said quickly as a word instead of each separate letter—refers to background vocals.
  3. The producer says most of my stuff is “modal.” 🤷‍♀️
  4. One of the songs I wrote back in Washington (we did it on Saturday)…I told Dallas it was in the key of G minor and he replied, “It’s really in the key of E phrygian mode.”  😳

So, while I really don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to songwriting, one thing I do know: I love music and Jesus, so I’m gonna carry on.
